PRACTICAL SYDNEY PAINTING ADVICE

Why Is Exterior Paint Peeling?

Peeling exterior paint is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The right repair depends on whether the coating has lost adhesion, the underlying surface is damaged or moisture is still reaching the substrate. Painting over loose material without investigating the cause can leave the original problem unresolved.

Start with where and how the coating fails

Photograph whether paint is lifting in sheets, blistering, cracking or powdering, and record which elevation, trim or sheltered surface is involved. Note whether the condition appeared after weather exposure or a previous coating. Appearance may suggest questions to investigate, but it cannot confirm the cause by itself.

Check for moisture before applying more paint

Leaks, faulty joints, damp timber, rising moisture or condensation can contribute to coating failure. Determine whether the surface is dry and sound before selecting preparation and recoating. A decorative topcoat does not repair the source of water entry, rot or deteriorating building fabric.

Consider adhesion and coating compatibility

Insufficient cleaning, contaminated surfaces, unsuitable primer or incompatible old and new coatings may impair adhesion. Identify the existing substrate and prior finish where possible. Surface tests and appropriate manufacturer guidance can be necessary rather than guessing that a thicker new coat will bond.

Inspect timber, render and metal separately

Flaking paint on timber may coincide with movement, weathering or deterioration; render can have cracking or chalky areas; metal can have corrosion beneath failed coatings. These situations call for different preparation and potentially repair trades. A one-size-fits-all stripping or priming instruction is not reliable.

Plan safe preparation, scope and handover

Ask what areas of failing paint will be treated, how adjacent sound coatings are assessed, what primer and finish are specified, and whether repairs and access equipment are included. Old layers may require lead-risk assessment before disturbing them. Do not dry-sand suspect hazardous coatings; seek qualified guidance if needed.

Questions to consider

Can I simply paint over peeling exterior paint?

No. Loose or unsound coatings and any underlying cause should be assessed and appropriately prepared first.

Does blistering always mean a leak?

No. Moisture is one possible factor, but heat, application and coating compatibility can also matter; an inspection is needed.

Can painting fix rotted timber?

No. Deteriorated wood must be evaluated and repaired or replaced as appropriate before deciding how to coat it.
